Wisconsin
Syria: Should the U.S. Intervene?
Over the past two years, Syria has become a ground of world-wide political conflict. We are bombarded with images of extreme torture and suffering that has only worsened. The U.S. has been sending arms to the Free Syrian Army, but do we really know whose hands these weapons are ultimately falling into? Are we helping the situation, or are we aiding the perpetuation of chaos in the Middle East? The question has recently become: Should the U.S. government intervene on the civil war with military action?
Shouldn’t all UW students get a discount to Badger games?
Since I have come to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside this fall, I have found out a few things about Wisconsinites and their sports. Wisconsinites love the Packers, the Brew Crew has a pretty strong following, and no one likes the Bucks unless you are from Milwaukee. The other big thing that I have noticed is that everyone on campus has an abundance of Badger sports gear and are proud to show off the red and white. After talking to a lot of different students here on campus, I have found out that there is a bigger following for the Badgers at each individual University of Wisconsin campus, than there is of their own University of Wisconsin sports team.
VP speech historical significance not lost on students, but their spirit to vote might be
Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, was a big day for Parkside and a milestone for many students and members of the Kenosha county community. With Joe Biden doing a day long tour of Wisconsin, stopping at UW-Oshkosh, then down here at UW-Parkside, it was a chance for many people to hear a statesman speak publicly. The significance was not lost on the students here.
Around 1,500 people came to see Vice President Biden, many of them students, several of them clearly showing support, along with their fellow students who served as volunteers for the event. When the Vice President took the podium after several other speakers, there was much shouting coming from the crowd. There was a crackling energy near the end of his speech from students when he mentioned women’s rights, abortion, planned parenthood, healthcare, and especially Pell Grants and education. Students were energized, motivated, and involved-except in the eyes of a few.
Joe Biden stirs up support at Parkside
Vice President Joe Biden appeared at Parkside last Friday, Oct. 26, 2012. On his one day, two-stop tour of Wisconsin, he urged supporters to take the opportunity to vote early and rallied people in Wisconsin during the home stretch of what has shaped up to be a tight campaign race. Packed into the Student Activity Center gymnasium, Biden told 1,500 students and other supporters that, “We’re going to win Wisconsin.”
Biden praised President Barack Obama’s performance in the final Presidential debate against Republican opponent, Governor Mitt Romney. “I didn’t know if Governor Romney was endorsing Barack or debating Barack,” Biden said. He referenced back to earlier in the campaign when Gov. Romney was shown in the media as a “flip-flopper,” frequently changing his position on key issues. Biden took it further by stating, “I didn’t recognize that guy but I was appreciative he endorsed everything we’ve done in American foreign policy.”
