Women’s basketball preview 2012-2013

The Lady Rangers have a lot to live up to this season. They have been a powerhouse in the GLVC for nearly a decade playing under Coach Jenny Knight-Kenesie, while also making some noise in post-season play on the national scene, NCAA division two, over the past few seasons. This year’s version of the Lady Rangers has a good mixture of experience and youth.

Men’s basketball preview 2012-2013

The 2012-2013 men’s basketball team here at Parkside is a talented one. If they can stay healthy this year, they can do some damage in conference. Health is one thing that Coach Reigel can’t control, but is going to heave to deal with all season. With that being said, he has a talented bunch that is led by a multi-talented senior.

The team’s scoring catalyst and overall best player is senior forward Jeremy Saffold. Saffold was a prized recruit coming out of high school that has not been disappointing. His scoring average has been in the mid-teens while gobbling up five rebounds a game during his first three seasons. Those numbers have garnered some awards and recognition for Saffold that will hopefully land him overseas next season. This year, Saffold is a potential division two All-American. Through five games this season, Jeremy is averaging 23.5 points a game and pulling down 5.6 rebounds. He has produced better numbers by becoming a more efficient player. He is shooting 52 percent from the field, 83 percent from the line, and 39 percent from downtown. If he finishes this season anywhere close to those numbers, they will all be career highs.

Shouldn’t all UW students get a discount to Badger games?

Since I have come to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside this fall, I have found out a few things about Wisconsinites and their sports. Wisconsinites love the Packers, the Brew Crew has a pretty strong following, and no one likes the Bucks unless you are from Milwaukee. The other big thing that I have noticed is that everyone on campus has an abundance of Badger sports gear and are proud to show off the red and white. After talking to a lot of different students here on campus, I have found out that there is a bigger following for the Badgers at each individual University of Wisconsin campus, than there is of their own University of Wisconsin sports team.

Taking advantage of golden opportunities

On Friday, Oct. 12, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers men’s soccer team squared off against the University of Illinois-Springfield. The Rangers started off the game like bats out of hell. They swarmed around the goal, and there was nothing the UIS defense could do about it. UW- Parkside had two outstanding corner kicks within the first ten minutes. Unfortunately, neither attempt could be converted with a header.

No time wasted

On Friday, Oct. 12, the lady Rangers soccer team took on University of Illinois-Springfield. The opening whistle blew to start the game. Before I could even bat an eye, the lady Rangers scored the first goal of the game. Madison Pickett bombed a lead pass down field to Ashley Meyer, who shielded off a defender with her body to receive the pass cleanly. Ashley then floated the ball ever so perfectly over the UIS goalkeeper’s head into the net, while still being harassed by the pesky UIS defender who was hanging around like a gnat.
