Niyork highlights 10 top five finishers between men’s and women’s teams
Niyork wins 5000 meter, nine others place in top five

The men’s and women’s track teams are nearing the end of the indoor season as they competed in the GLVC championships on February 27th and 28th. The men’s team finished 7th overall while the women’s team came in 8th overall.
Men’s outstanding performances
The Rangers had some outstanding individual performers including 10 total top-five finishers including Senior Pat Niyork’s victory in the 5000-meters with an impressive time of 14:36.99. Four other men finished in the top five. Junior Armando Torres finished 4th in the 5000-meter with a time of 14:44.90.
Torres also took 5th place in the 3,000-meters finishing in 8:37.58. Yahir Hernandez, a sophomore, came in 4th in the 800-meters in 1:56.96. Sophomore Rhashad Gray had a strong day as he finished 3rd in the high jump with a height of 6’7”and also placed 7th in the 200-meter with a time of 22.72 seconds.
Women’s outstanding performances
The women’s team also had five top-five finishes highlighted by two 2nd place finishers. Junior Mariah Palmer had an impressive showing as she took 2nd in the mile, finishing in 5:00.32 seconds and 4th in the 800-meter with a time of 2:18.26. Freshman Amanda Johnson took 5th also in the mile, coming in at 5:08.82.
Sophomore Jataeia Lewis finished 4th in the 200 – meter event with a time of 25.63. The Rangers took 2nd place in the distance medley relay as Monica Geiser, Amanda Johnson, Jataeia Lewis, and Moriah Palmer combined to finish in 12:11.37.
Palmer was also named to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Team in the 800-meters by The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in their all-region awards.
She will compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships at Pittsburg State University on March 11th and March 12th in the mile, 800-meter, 3000-meter, and 5000-meter events. Pat Niyork will also possibly compete in the 5000-meter event.
The Rangers begin their outdoor season on March 17th at the Alabama Relays.
