Attention precocious poets, fiction fanatics and loquacious lyrists: Straylight Literary Magazine will proudly host their first fiction contest this October.
In the past, Straylight held both annual poetry and E-Reader of the year contests. With the addition of a short fiction contest, Straylight looks forward to receiving new submissions and, ultimately, fostering the creative minds of UW-Parkside students and Straylight readers alike.
The rules for the fiction contest are few and simple. In no more than 5,000 words and no less than 1,000, contestants are encouraged to convey their best piece of fiction. Entries are limited to one submission per person. All contestants are required to purchase a Straylight journal in their respective submission field. By doing so, both poetry contestants and short fiction contestants receive free submission into the contest. The journal cost is $8 for students and $10 for non-students. Fiction submissions are due by 21 October, and poetry submissions will be due in the spring.
The highest acclaimed piece will receive a $125 dollar award. Second and third place entries will be awarded $50 and $25 dollars respectively. Additionally, each of the top three contestants in poetry and fiction will win a year subscription to Straylight and three copies of the journal that their piece is featured in.
And, for all writers who simply wish to write for the magazine, Straylight is always looking for submissions. By simply contributing, avid Straylight readers and writers have the opportunity to win Straylight’s annual E-Reader award. In order to be selected for the e-reader of the year award, authors must be current, registered UW-Parkside students. Additionally, they must have had a piece of either poetry or fiction published since the last judging.
As anonymity is essential for fair judging, Straylight asks all contestants to refrain from including their names or personal information on their works. However, Straylight requires a separate cover letter that includes the author’s name and brief biography in order to be considered. For emailed submissions, authors should send their works to submissions@Straylightmag.com. Otherwise, postal submissions must be accompanied by a check payment and either a contact email address or phone number in an envelope addressed to:
