Diverse Art For Diverse School

To some people, the art gallery in the Communication Arts building is a mystery. This was the case for me, until one spectacular day, I happened to find the doors wide open, lights on and the room filled with art. Now for some strange reason I have the funny feeling that I am not alone when it comes to this lack of knowledge and awareness about this art gallery and its current exhibition, so I figured that it would be a good idea to investigate and share what I have learned.
The gallery, located just inside the door to Communication Arts from the parking lot side of the building, runs parallel to the hallway in front of the theater and box-office. The exhibition, “The Team: Artwork created by Faculty & Staff of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside” opened Tuesday, Sept. 7, and will run through Oct. 7, 2010.

Now the name is fairly self-explanatory but just to clarify this art exhibit features faculty only. This includes faculty, lecturers, and part-time teachers of classes within the art department. Also showcased are a few of the art departments “support staff” like Dave Buchanan who runs the publicity side of the art department and the Dean himself, Dean Yohnk. The exhibition features any and all styles of art from sculpture and ceramics to paintings, both oil and acrylic, digital and traditional drawing, photography, furniture, stained glass and many more.

My favorite piece was a pencil drawing of a woman’s face that was is so incredibly detailed you could mistake it for a black and white picture. Some people may notice, when strolling through the gallery, that not every single Art Department faculty member submitted a piece for the exhibition. Commenting on this issue, the wonderful Mrs. Lisa Marie Barber had this to say; “There are several staff folks that help us a ton that aren’t in the show because they decided not to be in it–which was fine. We didn’t want anyone to have extra pressure to be part of the exhibit because everyone who works for UWP does so much already.”

Even when leaving some staff members out, this exhibition does a great job of framing the great diversity we have here in the University Wisconsin-Parkside art department. If you would like to attend this great show of culture and diversity, here are some details you won’t want to miss. The show runs every Monday and Thursdays 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3:00 p.m. until 8:00pm. Almost as good as the art is the price to this show, which is nothing because this is a free show. The exhibition closes on October 7, 2010 so get there while you still can!
